Alexey Golovin

Alexey Golovin artist who has graduated from the well-known St. Petersburg Academy of Three Noblest Arts. He is a monumentalist and easel painter. He is a painter and a graphist as well. He adores the academic painting but does not avoid modern novelties.
It doesn't mean inconsistency but versatility of the creative personality.
And a peculiar range of themes and genres are already typical for this personality.
Antiquity theme
Such is the history that during the flowering of the human civilization, artists usually address to the culture of Ancient Greece trying to express the spiritual growth of the time in its perfect forms and during the crises they also address to it seeking the legendary harmony which is insufficient in the nowadays world...
The antiquity untroubled world is brought back by the artist in sunny views of the southern nature where perfectly built people have carefree fun or talk easily merging with the landscape in a harmony ("Sunny Day" (1999), "Near the Springs" (1999), "Having Rest Near the Springs" (2000))…
But the artist is attracted not only by idyllic nature. He has a sense of monumentalism which was typical for the antiquity artists as well.
A.Golovin has managed to crystallize out his natural ability into pure forms in the monumental painting workshop of Professor A.A.Mylnikova, an academician of the Russian Academy of Arts.
It can be seen in the following works of the young artist: "Antiquity Fantasy" (2003), a triptych "Antique Holiday" (2003), "Perseus" (2004)…
But for the artist Alexey Golovin the antiquity does not mean only the ancient world. He correlates real and mythical events of the antiquity with the present time…
So they perceive his monumental canvas "Odysseus's Coming Back" painted by the painter in 2006.
It should be noted that this work of the artist is not only the lately created most large-scale canvas (275х800 cm) of St. Petersburg school of historical painting but it is grandiose in concept as well.
The plot is the struggle of Odysseus who came back to his native island Itaka after continuous wanderings and found his wife Penelope's admirers in the imperial palace who were ruining his state …
The semantic center of the canvas is Odysseus aiming his bow not at a mythical target now but at the devastators of his world.
The figure of an archer has always been attractive for artwork creators for its heroic nature… Let's remember Paris the archer on the western pediment of Athena Aphaea Temple on the island of Aegina; archers shooting at Saint Sebastian in Pollaiolo's painting, Hercules the archer by Bourdelle… Murder for the sake of murder…
Here is another theme - protection of the own world.
In this content A.Golovin's canvas is close to A.Konchalovsky's film-epopee "Odyssey". The Russian director by his veiw of the subject, when the philosophy of life was brought to the foreground instead of lots of special effects, actually "blew up" the stereotyped glossy world of Hollywood America…
The artist Golovin by his painting once again called for saving the country from different extremists aiming to split it. Thus, the antiquity helped the painter allegorically express the problem existing in nowadays Russia …
This idea is in the artist's perfect painting methods too. The hot colour, perfect anatomy of warriors, accurate representation of historical accessories, verified light-to-dark modeling, variety of emotional experience within: from fright to confidence of victory. Everything favours the perception of the painting which content itself serves to such a high purpose as the world integrity…
The modern times
But there are not only allusions in the artist's thinking.
He is also attracted by emotional experience of his contemporaries.
Herewith, it is interesting that the painter shows the intimate world of his relatives. His heroes are his family, friends… The internal basis for the master's creations is the theme of creativity. There was a good reason that the background for those works was the workshop interior.
The artist reflects the philosophical dialogue of generations in "Self-Portrait With the Grandfather" (2001), "throes of creation" in the watercolor painting "Architect" (1999), reasoning on the future in the work "Friends" (2000)…
The theme of family values, national traditions is also interesting…
The following works of the artist are those: "Origins" (1999) showing the world of Russian village; "Family" (2000) adding the poetic sense of the bible rest to an eastern family meal on their way to Egypt; "Victory Day" (1999) showing the identical emotional experience of the grandfather and the grandson on such a significant holiday for the country…
And here again there is a tremendous feeling of monumentalism typical for those works…
The artist glorifies the human feelings as well as every object in these works under his brush or pencil gets the tangible importance…
Probably, as a result of this the artist also turns to less monumental genre as a still life…
Still life
Really, the sense of monumentalism is also typical for most still lives of the artist. The "Dutch" still lives of the painter ("Bouquet" (2004), "Still life with a white vase" (2005), "Still Life With a Parrot" (2007)) are monumental as well as modern ones ("Still Life With Dry Flowers" (2000), "Still Life With a Drum" (2000))…
The method is ingenious and simple. The surface on which all the objects are has no depth. The artist shows only the table horizontal. Thus, viewers are not allowed to look at the still life top down…
Being in search, A.Golovin addresses to the Dutch's traditions. He paints huge bouquets in luxurious vases, various fruit, parrots having paradise feathering, fragile glasses and heavy ancient nautilus goblets, eastern carpets …
But in spite of the monumentalism of these still lives, they are also lyrical. The wine left in the glass, the lemon peel like a lacet give a hint that the man has left the convivial table only for one minute…
Portrait
Well, a man is still the main hero in the artist's canvases.
He is the main character of both large-scale paintings with a plot and, of course, portraits…
The artist addresses to a difficult genre of a gala portrait.
Nowadays the gala portrait is in crisis period. Clients wish to see themselves ideal and in rich surrounding…
Painting portraits the artist does not follow styles but keeps the traditions of St. Petersburg school based on strict colour and verified selection of accessories helping disclose the psychology of the image.
Those are the portraits of the best representatives of the actor brotherhood of St. Petersburg: the portraits of M.Boiarsky (2003), I.Dmitriev (2004)…
But the painter is interested not only in the creative elite. He makes portraits of ordinary contemporaries…
Through his monumental and easel canvases, stained-glass windows, sketches of wall paintings and inlays, graphic sheets, the young artist appears as a mature creative personality who has developed his original art methods and techniques.
His earlier and present works indicate not only his skill level for today but also his enormous creative potential for the future…
